Ebook About
NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • The epic story of the greatest quest in all of science—the holy grail of physics that would explain the creation of the universe—from renowned theoretical physicist and author of The Future of the Mind and The Future of HumanityWhen Newton discovered the law of gravity, he unified the rules governing the heavens and the Earth. Since then, physicists have been placing new forces into ever-grander theories. But perhaps the ultimate challenge is achieving a monumental synthesis of the two remaining theories—relativity and the quantum theory. This would be the crowning achievement of science, a profound merging of all the forces of nature into one beautiful, magnificent equation to unlock the deepest mysteries in science: What happened before the Big Bang? What lies on the other side of a black hole? Are there other universes and dimensions? Is time travel possible? Why are we here? Kaku also explains the intense controversy swirling around this theory, with Nobel laureates taking opposite sides on this vital question. It is a captivating, gripping story; what’s at stake is nothing less than our conception of the universe. Written with Kaku’s trademark enthusiasm and clarity, this epic and engaging journey is the story of The God Equation.

Book The God Equation: The Quest for a Theory of Everything Review :

Michio Kaku is obviously a distinguished physicist who has done pioneering work in string theory as well as an accomplished author. However, the God Equation is by and large regurgitated material. In most of the book he traces the development of modern physics from its origins in the Renaissance to some of the more esoteric versions today. It’s not that there’s anything wrong with this history. It’s just that it’s been done thousands of times, many of which were better written. When Kaku finally gets to String Theory his explanations are more basic than an extended article in the Sunday edition of the New York Times. All of which makes for a very forgettable book. There are some good points; a spirited defense of beauty in physics based on symmetry, for example. But mostly it’s simply a rehash. Recommended only if you have rarely read a book on modern physics.
Michio Kaku is a brilliant and renowned physicist that has appeared in many documentaries in the past decade or so, often explaining his favorite topic: String Theory. He has worked on String Theory since the 1960s, and helped create String Field Theory.Kaku starts the book by giving a bit of background on the idea of a unified “Theory of Everything,” a theory that would unify the four major forces of gravity, electromagnetism, and the weak and strong nuclear forces. This elusive theory would resolve the apparent conflict between general relativity and quantum mechanics at certain scales, and to many it would be the crowning achievement of all of science. The first few chapters go over the history of great contributions to physics over the years; mentioning Pythagoras, Galileo, and of course Newton. Kaku explains Faraday and Maxwell's work unifying electricity and magnetism, Einstein's special and general relativity, and then the advances in quantum mechanics. He explains these advances in language that is very accessible; you really don't have to have much of a background in science or mathematics to understand the concepts. There are plenty of diagrams and figures that help to explain some of the mathematics and physics concepts that Kaku mentions, and he does a pretty good job of explaining the problems and solutions that these brilliant scientists came up with; without showing you all of the complicated equations themselves.String Theory and M-Theory are introduced and explained starting in Chapter 6 about 140 pages in, and Kaku does a good job of explaining both the usefulness of String Theory, and the problems that detractors often mention. Kaku is obviously a little biased since he has been a proponent of the theory for over 50 years, but he admits this bias and explains why he is hopeful for the future. In the final chapter, Kaku focuses on how a Theory of Everything might affect religion, philosophy, and even the meaning of life. He describes his own personal beliefs, and even makes the point that since the universe appears to be headed toward an eventual Big Freeze where life is impossible; knowledge of a Theory of Everything might allow future beings to escape our universe and survive in another one!Overall I thought this was a great introduction and explanation of String Theory; where it came from, and what problems it is attempting to solve. It seems to be geared toward an audience that is interested in these theoretical physics concepts, but isn't necessarily familiar with the history of modern physics or the complex mathematics that it takes to work on them. The language was simple enough that my 12 year old has enjoyed reading some of the book, and in my opinion it might be best suited for around high-school age kids that are interested in the subject.
